Powerful Earthquake Raises Concerns About Megaquake in Japan

Heightened Risk After Recent Tremor

Tokyo, Japan - The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued its first warning about the possibility of a long-feared megaquake after a powerful earthquake struck the central part of the country on Thursday. The warning comes amid growing concerns about the potential for a catastrophic event that could cause widespread devastation.

Elevated Risk of Giant Earthquake

The JMA has raised the risk level for a megaquake in the Nankai Trough, an active seismic zone located off the coast of Japan's four main islands. The warning is based on data collected from the recent earthquake and other seismic activity in the region.

A megaquake in the Nankai Trough could generate a massive tsunami with waves reaching heights of up to 30 meters (98 feet). Such an event could cause extensive damage to coastal areas and trigger widespread landslides and infrastructure collapse.
